HRS 1940 Census Data

October 21, 2020

The 1940 Census Data V1.0 file is now available on the HRS website. It contains data on 9,654 HRS respondents who were successfully matched to the 1940 Census. The HRS 1940 Census project is part of a larger collaborative effort to conduct parallel linkages to the 1940 Census for respondents to the HRS, the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (WLS), the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP), and the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). The collaboration was led by researchers in the IPUMS program at the University of Minnesota.

To protect respondent confidentiality, researchers are required to access linked census data via the HRS restricted data access and licensing protocols. Refer to the Technical Documentation for more information about the project and how to obtain access.
